about
Recorded summer of 2014.
"Guantanamera" is one of Cuba's most popular patriot songs—its most popular lines taken from poet José Martí's collection, Versos Sencillos (Simple Verses). The song uses metaphor to criticize militarism and injustice, comparing the destructive trope of government to heart-breaking infidelity. Strangely, performances of this piece (mine included) are typically not the shrouded, despondent affairs one might assume they would be—rather, they are uplifting sessions of chant encapsulated in a raucous, joyful chorus. "Guantanamera" is a stylization of what it means to be human—to suffer is to feel(?), to feel is to be alive(?), to be alive is cause for celebration.
